Charities are nominated by our members and randomly selected each quarter prior to the meeting.

Eligibility

Who can nominate a nonprofit?

Any active CHD Hoot member may nominate up to three eligible nonprofits each calendar year.

 

What makes a nonprofit eligible?

To be considered for a Hoot presentation, organizations must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in good standing.
  • Be located in and primarily serve Durham, Orange, Chatham, or Alamance counties.
  • If an organization serves a larger geographic area, it must be able to demonstrate that at least 75% of its program funding benefits residents within Durham, Orange, Chatham, or Alamance counties.
  • If a local organization operates under a parent or umbrella 501(c)(3), it must guarantee that 100% of any Hoot award remains with the local chapter or affiliate.
  • Have annual revenue of at least $100,000, as reported on its most recent IRS Form 990.
  • Have held its 501(c)(3) designation for at least one year.
  • Be willing to send a representative to our quarterly meeting to deliver a five-minute presentation describing the organization's mission and how a Hoot award would be used if selected.
  • Not engage in political lobbying or political campaign activity.
  • Agree not to create, sell, distribute, or use Hoot member contact information for future fundraising or solicitation purposes.
  • Maintain a policy of nondiscrimination and not discriminate against any individual on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, disability, national origin, marital status, age, or any other classification protected by law.
